Custom Cardboard Boxes for Packaging
Custom cardboard boxes are widely used for retail, food service, processed food, medical / pharmaceutical, consumer products, household goods, and industrial packaging. Because of the nearly unlimited range of sizes, styles, board constructions, and printing options, these items, also called folding cartons, are frequently the preferred choice for highly automated as well as low volume applications. Heritage Pioneer is expert in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of custom cartons and services customers in the consumer packaged goods (CPG), retail, and industrial markets.
Box Styles
Because they are so popular, custom cardboard boxes are manufactured in a wide variety of standard styles. Many styles incorporate the tuck design feature, which includes a closure panel, a tuck flap, and two, shorter, dust flaps. Designs using this theme include the reverse tuck, the straight tuck, the reverse tuck and tongue to lock the flap closed, the reverse tuck with locking dust flaps, and the straight tuck design, where the top and bottom flaps are parallel rather than reversed. Cartons with a top flap and a locking bottom are also extremely popular. Other closure designs resemble styles used in the manufacture of corrugated shipping containers. These styles include the full overlap end seal, the partial overlap end seal, and the economy overlap end seal, where the inner flap does not extend to the opposite end of the carton. Custom cardboard boxes are often made with a gable top, which is the most popular design for consumer milk cartons. For retail applications, tray styles may be used in order to display the product on a store shelf or on a point of purchase display, or POP. Some tray designs lock the product in place, while others require some type of holding method to prevent the product from shifting.
Board Constructions of Custom Cardboard Boxes
Several different materials, or substrates, are used to make folding cartons. Paper based substrates fall into four categories – unbleached kraft paperboard, bleached kraft paperboard, recycled paperboard, and small flute corrugated board. Unbleached kraft, also called solid unbleached sulfate, is widely used because of its strength, stiffness, and sharp creasing characteristics. Bleached kraft, commonly referred to as solid bleached sulfate or SBS, is bright white and used where high impact printing is desired. The bleaching process reduces board stiffness in comparison to unbleached boxes, but improves odor and taste protection. For this reason SBS is often used for food packaging and pharmaceutical products. Small flute corrugated board is ideal where great strength and stiffness are required. Printing quality on corrugated is generally not as sharp, but corrugated has become more popular, along with recycled paperboard substrates, in part because of the growing demand for eco friendly packaging materials.
