Impulse Sealer Options Provide Flexibility in Plastic Packaging
Impulse sealer designs have great variety. No matter what the bag sealing application, there is a sealer to do the job given whatever budget, sealing speed, level of portability, and size and type of bag are involved. The devices come in several levels of automation. The simplest type is a hand held model, where an operator manually lowers the sealing bar. For faster sealing, a floor pedal model can be employed, allowing the operator to use both hands to move bags through the packaging line. Automatic sealers provide the greatest packaging speed, and can be set to run continuously or activated by an operator to seal on demand. For optimum performance, sealers require periodic replacement of teflon strips and cutter blades. Routine maintenance and parts replacement are relatively simple. We recommend the purchase of a spare parts kit whenever buying a new sealer.
Applications
Polyethylene bags and polyethylene tubing are the primary materials used on an impulse sealer. The size, thickness, and specific polyethylene formulation of the bag determine the specific type of sealer to be used. Sealers should be slightly longer than the width of the largest bag being sealed. Sealer length options run from as low as 4" wide sealing capacity to over 20" sealing capacity. Seal width is another important variable – wider seals provide greater strength and are needed for packaging heavy materials, expensive products, and bags that will later be exposed to rough handling. Most important, a wide seal is more secure and should be used for materials that cannot be exposed to contamination, such as food products or liquids. Impulse sealer widths range from 2mm to 12mm. When polyethylene tubing is involved, the sealer will have a cutter to separate the newly formed bag from the roll of tubing being fed into the device. Specialty sealers are used for applying double seals and the sealing of polypropylene bags and tubing. Stainless steel models are the correct choice for extreme packaging environments.
How to Select an Impulse Sealer
As mentioned above, the nature of the product being bagged and how the bag is to be handled primarily determine the appropriate sealer length and seal width. Throughput is another very important consideration. A sealer is designed for light, medium, or heavy volume use. Selecting a light duty device for a high volume sealing operation will lead to frequent parts replacement, seal failures, and excessive downtime. Resist the temptation to reduce cost on the purchase and select a machine designed for the job at hand. Heritage Pioneer can assist in the selection of the proper sealer for any industrial, food packaging, medical / pharmaceutical, and retail sealing application.
