Stretch Wrap Dispenser Packaging Tips
A stretch wrap dispenser is an inexpensive tool that is used to apply pallet wrapping film to a load of boxes or products to consolidate it for shipment. Tools vary in price according to the durability of their components and in particular, the quality of the braking system. The brake, which applies resistance to the core of the film, causes the film to stretch as it is being wrapped around the unitized load. A good quality device will apply consistent pressure to the roll, making the wrapping process easier for the warehouse staff and ensuring a tightly wrapped properly secured for shipping and handling. Brake parts and other components can be replaced on most tools, and it is usually more economical to invest in a high quality device rather than continually replace less expensive ones. This is particularly true in high volume wrapping environments.
How to Wrap a Pallet
Many people who have not been trained walk backwards around the load with the stretch wrap dispenser. Although this is a natural tendency, the backward movement causes dizziness. In high volume operations where wrapping speed is of the essence, this can become a real issue. The proper way to use the tool is to walk forward around the load, beginning at the bottom and spiraling upward. Initially, bend the knees slightly rather than from the waist, as it is easier on the back. To begin working with the stretch wrap dispenser, tuck the end of the film under a box on the lowest tier to hold it in place. Sometimes operators will knot the end of the film to prevent it from pulling away from under the box as they begin to wrap. If this is not practical, film can be tied to the pallet as well.

Operators save time and achieve better stretch by hugging close to the load as they wrap. This is a good practice for safety reasons as well. For heavy loads in particular, it is recommended to wrap a few extra layers at the bottom and top of the load. While automatic stretch wrappers normally cycle up and down a load, most operators prefer to stop hand wrapping at the top of the load, after wrapping six to nine inches above the top layer of boxes or product. The best way to cut off the film is to pull about two feet of film away from the load at high tension, poke a couple holes in the film near the wrapper, and push the wrapper downward toward the floor. Then, let the film relax and pat it down on the side of the load. If the film has good cling characteristics, it should hold in place. To prevent film tailing, tuck an edge of the film in a gap between film layers. Link back to the top of thisĀ Stretch Wrap Dispenser page.
