Types of Folding Cartons

There are many styles and types of cardboard packaging cartons to meet any customer’s needs, whether packaging large materials or fragile goods. Each style has its own benefits and uses. The tuck design feature, for example, is commonly used and includes a closure panel, a tuck flap, and two shorter dust flaps. This design is further customized to include the reverse tuck, straight tuck, reverse tuck and tongue, reverse tuck with locking dust flaps, and the straight tuck, in which the top and bottom flaps are parallel. Many commonly used cardboard boxes also have a top flap and a locking bottom. Some cartons have the full overlap end seal along with the partial overlap end seal, as well as the economy overlap end seal. These designs have inner flaps that do not extend to the other end of the carton. Another design is most popularly associated with consumer milk cartons, called the gable top. Consumers may also recognize tray-style carton packaging, often used to display items in retail stores on store shelves locking products in place or simply preventing them from shifting or falling.

Construction for Cardboard Boxes

Different materials are used for different types of boxes, and each form of construction serves its own packaging purposes. There are four types of materials, or substrates, used to construct cardboard boxes, including:
• Unbleached kraft paperboard is also called sold unbleached sulfate, and is a popular choice due its strength, stiffness and its sharp creasing capabilities.
• Bleached kraft paperboard is also known as sold bleached sulfate (SBS). This material is bright white and often used for designs that require bold printing. This material, although not as stiff as unbleached, keeps odor and taste well-protected and is commonly preferred for food packaging and pharmaceutical needs.
• Recycled paperboard has become popular choices for customers looking for greener and more environmentally-friendly packaging solutions.
• Small flute corrugated board is extremely strong and stiff, and while does not produce high-quality printing, is still one the more commonly used cardboard containers.
