The Wal-Mart Packaging Scorecard

As one of the largest retailers in the world, Wal-Mart has a great impact on sustainable packaging efforts, especially with the release of the Wal-Mart packaging scorecard. In 2006, Wal-Mart introduced the packaging scorecard as a sustainable initiative that works toward reducing packaging globally by 5% by the year 2013.  The scorecard measures a package's sustainability according to various factors, including production, material value, product-to-package ratio, recycled content, renewable energy, innovation and transportation, among other criteria. Suppliers can evaluate their packaging solutions relative to other suppliers and become motivated to actively seek out greener packaging solutions.

So what does the scorecard mean for packaging, businesses and the future of the environment?

What it means for packaging: The Wal-Mart packaging scorecard helps improves packaging by encouraging suppliers to use recycled and recyclable materials, think more creatively regarding packaging design and function, work toward reducing the use of fuel and energy, and contribute to a more sustainable future. The results include packaging that not only keep products safe, but also keep the environment safe.

What it means for businesses: Reducing packaging materials helps reduce the overall cost of packaging, as well. Less material and more compact designs allow for more space during shipping, lowering the cost of fuel and transportation. As consumers become more aware of green initiatives in the home and in the workplace, they will appreciate businesses' sustainable efforts, helping to boost sales and improve customer loyalty.

What it means for the environment: Landfills are continually piling up with non-biodegradable plastics that are harmful to the environment, animals and people. By reducing packaging, there is also a significant decrease waste, fuel and energy use, contributing to a healthier and safer environment.
