Vacuum Sealer Machine for Packaging
A vacuum sealer machine is used to enclose products within a laminated plastic bag purged of oxygen, in order to protect the contents from contamination or degradation from exposure to air, moisture, or electrostatic discharge (ESD). Vacuum sealing is used extensively in the food industry, for the protection of fresh foods, frozen foods, and many other types of processed foods. This system also has many applications in the packaging of medical devices, pharmaceutical products, household items, and electronics devices and components. Equipment is available to contain solid and liquid materials of all kinds. A wide range of product sizes, weights, and configurations can be run through standard machines, and equipment models are available for low and high volume applications, and to provide varying levels of vacuum and gas level control.
Packaging Applications
Vegetables, fruits, fish, meats, and other food products are frequently packaged with a vacuum sealer machine. Normally, foods are frozen before packaging, since the freezing process can compromise the seal integrity of the bag. Also, freezing prevents products from damage or losing shape from pressure exerted in the vacuuming process. Finally, freezing prior to packaging allows vegetables and other types of food to retain their color, which is extremely important to customer satisfaction. Fresh foods can also be packaged with this system, but with either fresh or frozen foods, this closure method ultimately, in and of itself, will not prevent spoilage. Oxygen sensitive and moisture sensitive medical devices and parts, medical lab items, and pharmaceutical products are commonly packaged with a vacuum sealer machine. Sophisticated controls that closely monitor oxygen and gas levels will ensure that these products and materials retain their integrity after packaging. Household products and personal items are often packaged in this style as well. Vacuuming will prevent jewelry items and metal products from tarnishing, and is an economical option particularly for long term storage of such items, or when products are stored in a damp or otherwise harsh environment. For demanding applications, machines come equipped with external monitoring of seal temperature, seal time, seal pressure, and gas pressure.
Bags for a Vacuum Sealer Machine
Bags and tubing used in conjunction with this equipment come in many formulations because performance requirements are dictated by the nature and condition of the products being packaged, and what type of environmental conditions are present during packaging, transit, and storage. Film constructions are complex. Polyethylene film is laminated with other materials, often including Nylon to provide stretchability. The film’s longation and shrink characteristics vary depending on application requirements. Since films are used to package items as small as a wristwatch or as large as a surfboard, films must be carefully selected. FDA approved films are widely available for direct contact food applicatons.
